Christmas is a great time for memories - accuracy is not expected but your input could stir a recollection from somebody else.
You're right Martin, needs someone to get the ball rolling so here is an anecdote told to me by Mr Botes himself.
The story relates to one of the passenger jobs, probably the Rem which was manouvring and a load of smoke was coming out of the chimney. The old man, probably Hamish Lawson, grabbed the telephone and rang the engine room and said "I say bloke, there's smoke coming out of the funnel". The wit in the engine room replied "When it comes out of anywhere else, let us know!" I believe a witch hunt for the poor unfortunate engineer ensued!
Hi John... Yes it was the Remuera and I dont believe the culprit was ever found.Making smoke was never a problem, it was said that passengers used the 'smoke signal' to find their way back to the ship in strange ports. I am sure that comment impressed the Chief no end. Will email you soon, have your address from Mike.
I never sailed on the Remuera but this story went the rounds some years ago and was heard from several sources.
I understand Remuera had a swimming pool with an underwater viewing area from one of the bars. Apparently a young honeymoon couple were on board but had been unable to secure a double berth cabin and were in fact in multiberth single sex cabins.
They discovered that at most mealtimes the swimming pool was unoccupied so they used the opportunity to indulge some of their marital gratification underwater.
Apparently the Purser (I was told Peter Allen) drew the short straw to invite them down to the bar for a pre-dinner drink.
